Bar protocol
You would, of course, find out all this for yourself but a little advance knowledge can help avoid confusion and allow you to concentrate on the good bits.
Girls outside the bar will try to entice you inside. Sometimes they carry signs telling you how much the beers cost or whether they have a show. Some signs tell you the ratio of beautiful girls to ugly ones!
Other times they will grab your hand (or nose or even genitals) and try and lead you inside.
Once inside you’ll find there are essentially two choices for places to sit; on a stool right by the stage where you’ll get a worms eye view of the dancers, or a few feet back at a table which is a little less taxing on the neck muscles.
The gentle art of persuasion
Before your first beer arrives, quite possibly before you have even had a chance to order it, several girls will have appeared at your side pressing their boobs against you, leaning on your thighs and generally being all touchy feely. They will be wanting to know your name, how you are and where you come from. But most of all they will be wanting you to buy them a drink.
If you refuse they will all eventually drift away but if you like the look of one of them go ahead and buy her a drink. Their drinks cost about the same as yours and consist of a small glass filled with ice and a splash of coke. This is normal, the girls make 50% commission on every drink they get bought and most of the time they don’t want to drink the stuff anyway.
It is, of course, possible to buy the girls alcoholic drinks. Some girls handle it well, others do not. If the girl you are with seems reluctant to drink alcohol it is best not to encourage her.
To suddenly have half a dozen scantily clad girls pawing at you the moment you walk in can be quite overwhelming if you are not used to it. Some people revel in it others would prefer to relax a little and survey the landscape a while.
Pay Bar
The chits for all the drinks you bought are stored in a little cup in front of you. When it’s time to leave hold them up and someone will take them away and add them up for you.
If you want to take the girl you with you will need to “pay bar”. The logic is that she is employed by the bar to dance and sell drinks. She can agree to leave with you but you must compensate the bar for lost revenue. The price varies from bar to bar but is usually between 700-1000 baht.
The girl will also expect to be rewarded for any services renedered in your hotel room. This has nothing to do with the bar and must be negotiated separately.
